Sleep to Dream

Sleep is something that I've been focused on lately. Unfortunately not in the doing of it, more in the wishing for more of it. But compared to Hunt who is working like a mad man (7 days a week with 12-hour shifts on the weekends) I don't have a good reason other than being a night owl that wakes up the later the evening gets. Every afternoon around 2:30 I wish for a door to my office that doesn't have a window and the ability to pull a George Constanza and sleep in a little napping nook under my desk...a girl can dream...er...hope.

Hunt sent me this cartoon and for some reason I immediately identified with it...

On a more serious note (why not?) a while back a friend posted a little blurb on the fact that while she is pregnant that sleep is precious, but the need for it is debilitating at times, especially since she and her husband are new missionaries to India with their three young children. She reflected on something that she read from CJ Mahaney's book Humility:
The fact is, God could have created us without a need for sleep. But He chose to build this need within us, and there's a spiritual purpose for it. Each night, as I confront my need again for sleep, I'm reminded that I'm a dependent creature. I am not self-sufficient. I am not the Creator. There is only One who "will neither slumber nor sleep." (Psalm 121:4), and I am not that One.
I had never occurred to me that of course the Creator could have made us without a need for sleep! This was something he purposefully made our bodies to require. I can't imagine what life would be like if I didn't have to "lay me down" to rest every night. It reminds me that I am a dependent creature and that my heavenly Father is set apart and wholly different from me.

The thought of never shutting down, not having time that is not infringed upon by the world unless I let it, of my mind never having a break from the constant swirl of thoughts that comes with consciousness...makes me want to go take a nap.

Really good point! It also makes you wonder about the significance of dreams - like maybe they are a way that God whispers to us. :)
